Definition of artistic practice? During 15 years, Carolina Bäckman and Andrea Deres have collaborated in different artistic constellations, sharing a curiosity in collective processes as well as dance and choreography as a practice staying with wonder and with wondering. As ‘C:A dans’ they delve into various formats of participatory work, exploring different topics and concepts through movement, play and sensorial curiosity. Interested in working with and towards an inter-generationality of participants and audiences.
Title of the investigation at the residency Sted i Spil ~ BIRCA
Description of investigations and findings

Together as one big family – Andrea, Kristian (documentarist/stage artist), Lau (3) + Carolina, Jan (radio and sound art producer/curator), Kim (10) and Ilon (6) – explored the artistic concept of “sted i spil” (“place in play”). Getting familiar with the space(s) of BIRCA. A wish to explore a responsive space of mutual proposals, impulses and play, where all participants can contribute and nurture, share and blend their respective experiences and curiosities across generations, professions, family roles. Through daily sessions – some common, some in smaller constellations – a universe of sensorial and poetic actions unfolded. Trees were recognised through the haptic sense, their leaves became a ‘Birca tea blend’ to smell and taste, instruments to create sound with, as well as a remedy to physically unify with and return to nature. By careful listening and by saying yes to play and fantasy, we also got to fly like birds and drive off in a vivid train symphony.

What are you most curious about or invested in in your own practice? Exploring how dance and choreography can generate a starting point in order to navigate in the world as responsible/responsive, caring, empathic beings. Investigating, moving and learning in relation to each other as well as our surroundings and co-beings. Exploring situations for and practicing being together across generations in a shared artistic space.
What questions did you bring to investigate and what questions are you leaving with? How can we deepen and open up family/iar relations while being in an artistic exploration together? What can we learn from a place and each other while getting familiar and engaging with/in it? ··· What does it mean to be a parent / an artist / a child / a being in a place of play and/or in an artistic process? How to sustain and transfer the delicate yet bold improvisational modus of listening and staying with, that arose through the residency? What is possible in this delicate time-space?
Transformative, creative moments at the residency While going into the black studio to tumble around a bit (day 4?) we suddenly found ourselves on a “resting-train”. Leaning into another as a long chain of bodies while engaging in a sound improvisation which was going on for more than 10 minutes. All seven of us – from the age of 3 to 49 – staying with and exploring the situation through a shared yet individual entrypoint. A strong moment which showed how finely tuned we had become – towards each other, the present, the situation, place.
