Title of the investigation at the residency Speculative dances
Description of investigations and findings

During two weeks I’ve been exploring the framework of Speculative dances, a new project where I merge my continuous aim for crossing theory and practice or dance and philosophical questions around the dance and building up a map where I can pose and systematize them. Speculative dances was smoothly unfolded in BIRCA’s landscape where I had the opportunity to get informed by the island and have precious time in the studio to work and generate a short but fruitful catalogue of five dances, result of five concrete speculations on dance. I also wanted to work with reading and chance procedures to generate new possible ways to unwrap the sequences of dances and generate different dramaturgical maps or readings of those combinations. For it I developed five different texts with the aim of evoking and inspiring, but also giving an imaginary and yet practical and approachable experience of the dances both without and with seeing them in space.

What are you most curious about or invested in in your own practice? I was cooking ideas and wishes and imagining different scenarios to bring a fragmentary but yet coherent work with a plurality of dances that could appear as something beyond me. In that sense the development of the residency was quite accurate with my intentions and expectations. I also had the previous desire of thinking strategies on how to present the work, of generating a game, presenting the work in a playful and interactive manner.
What questions did you bring to investigate and what questions are you leaving with? How to materialize and begin with the speculation game and how I could play with fiction, imagination and materialization of those dances. I’m leaving with new questions that are leading me to a clear second and more solid phase: how to keep on developing more dances informed by other agents, to keep on inviting new dances to the catalogue and mainly how to present or exchange this device with others, in that sense which instructions help better to get into the work.
Transformative, creative moments at the residency I got closer to other artists that have passed through BIRCA before, like for example discovering a set of cards that beautifully opened and strengthen my inspiration or reference in playing with that kind of display. We also got to directly know galleries and places around that helped to get a bit outside my work and get to know and recognize many inspirations and a common sensibility around the island artists. a conversation with around the energetic spaces in the island and how she reads them
