| Definition of artistic practice? | During the residency, we implemented artistic interviews, video (art documentary film), photography, movement, dancing, painting, and writing. |
| Title of the investigation at the residency | Hydro Communication - The Voices of Water |
| Description of investigations and findings | We participated in the Curious Encounters 3 residency at Earthwise Residency, an 8-week collaboration between artist-filmmaker Mariia and meteorologist-dancer Janina. Our focus was hydro communication —the codified language of water within more-than-human entities— examining how water communicates and transmits information, offering insights into ecosystem states. Through deliberate observation and listening, we uncovered non-human communication, fostering dialogue via water’s flow and enriching human and non-human connections. We questioned where wilderness finds its safe spaces and how it expresses them. Exploring Mols Bjerge’s hills and waterways on bikes and on foot, Mariia documented through photos and video, Janina with paintings and writings. We also recorded water soundscapes and interviewed locals about their relationship with water, forming the basis for a documentary on hydro communication. |
| What are you most curious about or invested in in your own practice? | Mariia's thoughts: Creating a welcoming space for sharing among humans and more-than-humans. As a filmmaker, I view my practice as exploratory archival work, with a primary focus on the respectful and gentle documentation of the wisdom and stories of various creatures and beings. The beauty of the Symbiocene and the interconnectedness of life gives me hope. Sharing and preserving this knowledge is both a privilege and a purpose, which I see as the core of my artistic practice. |
| What questions did you bring to investigate and what questions are you leaving with? | We had many questions in mind: What is hydro communication, what forms could it take? Can we sense and learn from the knowledge held by the water? How goes dialog without words? When and where water and the wilderness find their safe space and how is it communicated? And we still ponder: How to nurture and deepen the compassionate way of listening to water? Can we transmit the understanding we’ve gained from water and its state to others? How is the relationship between local people and water? |
| Transformative, creative moments at the residency | Janina's thoughts: A local woman took us to her favourite spot in Mols Bjerge. This was a mesmerizingly beautiful and hidden bog in the middle of an old forest. It had a huge impact on both of us. There, the earth is resting on water and you can feel it flowing underneath your feet. We kept going back to this pure and silent place, to see, to sense, and to understand. |
