| Definition of artistic practice? | I write and direct creative documentaries in which I mix reality with fictional sequencies. My aim is to use images, sound and music in order to convey meanings that bypass the rational understanding of the topics I explore. I like to create dreamy and poetical words and I prefer non linear storytellings. |
| Title of the investigation at the residency | Isolated, how geography influences our viewing of the world |
| Description of investigations and findings | The starting point of my research is : how does the landscape influences our thoughts and, viceversa, how do we project our thoughts on the territory we inhabit. In particular, my attention was directed on islands and the so called island mentality. Some of the fields I investigate are : the paradox of the sea, as an element that both unifies and divides. The paradox of the horizon and the coast, as places that give both a sensation of potential and of impediment. The island as the place of utopias. The freedom in the frame… |
| What are you most curious about or invested in in your own practice? | What I really like in my practice is the fact that a movie is a result of a collaboration. It mixes together different types of professionists, such as sound engineers , musicians, directors of photography, etc, but also the people I choose to interview. Everyone bringing his/her own point of view and competence, creating a web of interactions that will eventually lead to a unique and organic result : the movie. |
| What questions did you bring to investigate and what questions are you leaving with? | I arrived with the wish to question what is the so-called “island mentality” and how living on an island impacts your shaping of the world. I definitely left with more ideas and interesting reflections on this never ending topic. |
| Transformative, creative moments at the residency | My research took an interesting turn thanks to a book that was lent to me at the residency place (KYST of Ben Woodhams). In there I found a perspective that gave a new light to my project. Because the author lives on the island and Susanne Danig knows him, I had the chance to meet him and that encounter led to a significant and inspiring exchange. |
